A week (on foot) in Provence

Seduction was the obsession of Mazan’s most infamous son, the Marquis de Sade, whose former family home is our home for a night. The 18th-century libertine spent more time in jail than at his chateau in Mazan, his erotic and often sadistic novels having scandalised polite society. The building has been carefully restored to its former grandeur – the twisting staircase, Provencal windows, Empire chimney, antique furniture, garden and pool creating a country-chic vibe.

By the time we make it to the hilltop town of Crillon-le-Brave, we have lost our courage for battling the 35km/h wind.
